. governor romney today focused on fund-raising for the victims of the deadly storm while president obama canceled his events through wednesday to monitor the aftermath in response to hurricane sandy from the white house. we have team coverage here tonight. rick leventhal on the devastated jersey shore. shannon green on the storm damage in virginia, and ed henry tonight from the white house on the storm's political impact and the campaigns that are, tonight, frozen in place. many east coast residents heard or read weather forecasts and there's speculation about hybrid storms of the hurricane and nor'easter, perhaps, a super storm, as sandy approached, and they were understandably skeptical of what often turns out to be exaggerated meteorological storm forecasts. tonight they and millions of others find themselves suffering through what has turned out to be the mass devastation, wreckage, and misery that had been forecast for the eastern seaboard. fox news correspondent rick leventhal has our report from point pleasant, new jersey. >> reporter: point pleasant beach is one of many seaside c

sandy disrupting the campaigns of president obama and governor romney seven days until election day. the president distracted dealing with a nationa emergency. governor romney distracted trying to find the appropriate balance of campaigning in the midst of national catastrophe. fox news chief white house correspondent ed henry with our report. >> this is a tough time for a lot of people. >> after cancelling to more campaign events president obama headed to the red cross to continue the role of heeler in chief. >> there is no excuse for inaction at this point. i won every agency to lean forward and to make sure that we are getting the resources where they need to know where they are needed as quickly as possible. >> looking presidential in the final week of a tight campaign in a rol that won -- one rare praise from governor chris christie who gave the keynote address at the republican national convention. >> she has been very attentive. anything that i have asked for his gun. i think the president publicly r that. he has done as far as i'm concerned, great job for new jersey. >> of t

president obama or governor romney to return to the campaign trail. they're operating with very little information. we can't know at this point just how devastating the damage might turn out to be. as a result i think both campaigns are being very cautious about what they do other than paying attention to the storm. >> woodruff: susan, what's your read on how the campaigns are dealing with all this? >> i think there are two things to look at. one is just the logistics, for instance, does this storm affect early voting that's going on now in ohio and north carolina and virginia? but a second thing is the larger atmospherics. what is the effect of having president obama go off the campaign trail back to the white house? the white house just this afternoon released a photo of him meeting in the situation room to get an update on storm damage. it seems to me that has an impact on a race where governor romney has been making some progress in recent days. does this kind of freeze things for where they are now. >> woodruff: that's what i wanted to ask you, susan. does one candidate or another

is that obama is doing a good job. that he's somebody who can be trutsed. >> reporter: in florida, governor romney criticized the administration's record helping small business. >> sometimes regulators seem to look at businesses like they're the enemy. >> reporter: he never mentioned the president by name, but governor jeb bush did, claiming mr. obama is making excuses for his failures. >> it's almost as though the dog ate my homework is the reason why we're going to tough times. >> reporter: early voting reopened in maryland with long lines. >> three hours. >> yeah, yeah. but it's worth it. >> reporter: in areas where flooding destroyed some polling place, they're considering putting up tents to make sure residents can vote tuesday. we are watching the polls very closely. quinnipiac says the president is up by five percentage points in ohio but his lead is so slim in florida and virginia, it's considered a tie. >> both sides of that campaign will closely be watching tomorrow's release of the monthly employment reports. scott mcgrew continues our coverage. >> reporter: good morning. this wi

, president obama and governor romney back out making their case to voters as the clock ticks down. five days until americans go to the polls, "your voice, your vote," and tonight, our brand-new abc news/"washington post" poll shows this. the president with a one-point edge. he also got a big helpful endorsement today, and i want to bring in "good morning america" co-anchor, anchor of "this week," george stephanopoulos. george? >> reporter: that's right. mayor michael bloomberg, of new york city, independent mayor michael bloomberg, had criticized president obama in the past, said he was not going to endorse. today he came out and said he's endorsing the president because he believes he's best positioned to lead on the issue of climate change, which the mayor believes had an impact on this hurricane. of course, that comes on top of that praise from governor chris christie, the republican governor of new jersey yesterday, and the poll you just cited, diane, also shows that nearly 8 out of 10 americans think the president has done a good job handling this hurricane. >> what about the voters who

's a consequential difference. they know that president obama is going to increase taxes, where, where governor romney is not if he's elected president. that's an important issue distinction. coming into the last debate, the annenberg survey showed that the public thought that governor romney was more likely to take the country into a war, than was president obama. but the public also believed that president obama had gone around the world apologizing. now in the last debate, governor romney reassured that he was not as likely to take people into war as they had thought in that debate. and i think that was a calculated strategy on his part. now, you could say, "and it was illegitimate. you secretly know that he was more likely." but nonetheless, what we can measure is whether they get what he said he was going to do in the context. and i think that president obama responded to the apologizing around the world claim in a number of ways that were effective as well. and i think one of the things that we can say about debates making a difference is that, had there been debates in the goldwater/john

it but. anyway, in a poll showing that people have all right voted so that the governor is ahead by six points 52 percent to 46 percent. early voters helped obama win in 2008 what if they are doing the reverse in 2012? karl rove is looking at this. what do you make of this, karl? karl: as you say those who have voted one in six voters who said they voted they gave mitt romney a six-point margin, less than one out of five voters say they are going to vote before election day, they split evenly between president obama and governor romney which tends to indicate that at least the enthusiastic el her voters are republican and the democrats have a prove with a lack of enthusiasm among their people and finally on election day the people would plan, just less than two-thirds 63 percent plan to vote on election day, they split for governor romney by the same number six points 51 to 45 percent so at least according to gallup this looks good. it is also borne out by if you look at the battleground state roughly 11 million, rather, 11 percent advantage for democrats either voting early or casting
